Hosted PowerSchool

Summary #

If your school uses Pearson Education to host PowerSchool for you (instead of running it on your own server), you may have problems accessing the components that use Java programs, like PowerTeacher. There are also some schools that are reporting problems where Pearson is denying connections to the hosted servers if you are using a proxy server (like SecureSchool).

More Information #

The Java components do not always read the proxy settings from Internet Explorer correctly. To eliminate this problem, you need to make a firewall rule allowing your workstations to connect to Pearson’s servers. To do this, go to “Firewall” -> “Protocol Rules” -> “Add a Rule”, and add the following rule:

  • Name: Pearson Education
  • Type: Allow
  • Protocol: All
  • Source Address: Any
  • Destination Address: 64.210.212.0/22

If you are having problems accessing the site completely, for example if the login page does not even load, you also need to tell your web browser to bypass the proxy server when going to that site. If you are using Internet Explorer, go to “Tools” -> “Internet Options” -> “Connections” -> click the “LAN Settings” button -> next to the proxy address, click “Advanced”. In the text box in the “Exceptions” area, add the hostname you use to access PowerSchool (“myschool.powerschool.com” for example).

If you need to make a proxy bypass for the site for more than one workstation then add the site to your group policy for Internet Explorer or, if you’re using the proxy auto detect method, add them to SecureSchool’s list of exceptions by going to “Setup”->”Proxy Config Script”>”Add an Exception”.
