Make a user unfiltered, but still track activity

Summary #

There are some situations where you want certain users unfiltered, but still want to track what they do in the log. Most people will simply create a firewall rule for the workstation and remove the proxy settings, but this does not keep the ability to log traffic. This will show you the better way to do it.

More Information #

The best solution is to make (or use) a separate filter sets for these unfiltered users (for example, SSB_Administrators) and place the users in this filter set.

Additionally, we strongly recommend that you do not make this filter set 100% unfiltered. To setup the Filter Set to be “mostly open”,  go to “Content Filtering” -> “Weight Threshold” -> select your filter set.   Now, set the Weight Threshold to “0”.   This turns off Content Filtering.   Next, go to “Website Filtering ” -> “Website Access” -> select your filter set.   We recommend you uncheck all the lists except the following, to still provide you basic safe browsing protection:

  • Safe Sites
  • Hacking
  • Phishing
  • Pornography
  • Proxy
  • Virus Infected
  • Warez

Once you modify the lists and put the user in the correct filter set, go to “Commit Changes” and restart.
