📷 SecureSchool: Updating Your Static IP Address After an ISP Change #

📖 Overview #

If your Internet provider assigns your school a new static IP address (for example, after switching ISPs or upgrading your Internet service), SecureSchool will need to be updated with the new network settings.

Fortunately, this process is quick and can usually be completed directly through the SecureSchool web-based controls with minimal downtime.

This guide explains how to safely update your:

  • Public / Static IP Address
  • Subnet Mask
  • Default Gateway

🔎 When to Use #

  • Your ISP has assigned you a new static IP address
  • You are switching Internet providers
  • Your ISP upgraded or changed your Internet service
  • SecureSchool cannot reach the Internet after an ISP change

⚠️ Before You Begin #

  • Obtain the new network settings from your ISP
  • Verify the exact Static IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Default Gateway
  • Schedule the change during a maintenance window if possible

Important: Do not change the DNS server settings unless specifically instructed by K12USA Support.

Step 1 β€” Log into SecureSchool #

Log into the SecureSchool web interface using an administrator account.

Step 2 β€” Navigate to Basic Setup #

Go to:Β  Setup β†’ Basic Setup

Step 3 β€” Update the Outside Interface Settings #

Under the Outside Interface Settings section, update the following fields with the information provided by your ISP:

  • Outside IP Address

Step 4 β€” Save the Changes #

Click Save Changes.

Step 5 β€” Commit and Restart #

After saving the settings:

  1. Click Commit/Restart
  2. Allow SecureSchool several minutes to restart networking services

During this time, Internet access may temporarily disconnect and SecureSchool services may briefly restart.

🔄 Automatic Check-In to K12USA #

Once SecureSchool reconnects to the Internet, it will automatically:

  • β€œPhone home” to K12USA
  • Report the updated IP information
  • Resume normal communication with our support systems

In most cases, no additional action is required.

⏱️ Expected Downtime #

Most IP address changes only require a brief interruption while networking services restart. In many cases, downtime is only a few minutes.

🧩 Troubleshooting #

SecureSchool Cannot Reach the Internet After Changes #

Double-check the following settings:

  • IP Address
  • Subnet Mask
  • Default Gateway

Even a small typo can prevent connectivity.

Unsure Which Values to Enter? #

Contact your ISP directly and ask them to confirm the Static IP Address, Gateway, and Subnet Mask.

Still Offline After Updating? #

  • Reboot the ISP modem/router if applicable
  • Verify cabling
  • Contact K12USA Support for assistance

💡 Helpful Tip #

If your ISP provides a future activation date for the new IP settings, wait until the actual cutover occurs before applying the changes in SecureSchool.

Applying the new IP settings too early may disconnect SecureSchool from the Internet.
